Geoff Bodine to appear at Elkins Raceway

Former Daytona winner to take on area drivers at Kerens track

Long time NASCAR driver Geoff Bodine will be making his first-ever appearance to the area when he competes at Elkins Raceway in Kerens tonight.

Bodine will be going head-to-head with a strong crop of local drivers in the Edge Crate late model division. He will be driving the Norm Weaver Channel 5 News sponsored No. 5 Levi Garrett car.

Gates are scheduled to open at 5 p.m. and hot laps will hit the track at 7:30 p.m.

Bodine last raced on the NASCAR?circuit in 2011.

He has 575 career starts, 18 career wins, 100 Top 5 finishes and 190 Top 10 finishes.

Bodine started his NASCAR career in 1982 and earned Rookie of the Year honors in his first full season in the Winston Cup.

He holds the track record at Atlanta Motor Speedway with a speed of over 197 miles per hour from his polesitting run after the track was repaved in 1997.

Bodine is the co-owner of the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Company which created the winning bobsleds for the U.S. teams, winning gold medals in both the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

He was honored as one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers during NASCAR's 50th Anniversary celebration.

Bodine's most famous minute came in 1986 when he won the Daytona 500.
