MORGANTOWN - Heath Broughton pitched five strong innings to help lead Elkins to a 7-5 win over Morgantown Thursday in American Legion action at Hawley Field.
Broughton scattered seven hits, walked three and struck out three to notch the win for Post 29 (3-0).
Broughton helped his own cause at the plate with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
James Gainer pitched three scoreless innings of relief for Elkins.
Gainer allowed just one hit and struck out two.
Corey Howell pitched the ninth inning and earned the save for Post 29. Howell gave up one run on two hits, walked one and struck out one.
Cody Gainer, Colby Gainer, Scott Fox and Ryne Bonnell had two hits each for Post 29.
"Our pitchers really pitched well and we hit the ball tonight," Elkins general manager Chris George said. "We had plenty of opportunities to break the game open, but didn't capitalize. It's early in the season and we can fix our mistakes, though."
Brandon Wisman took the loss for Post 2 in eight innings of work.
He was tagged for 13 hits, walked three and struck out seven.
Jimmy Galusky had two hits and one RBI, while Albie Eddy had one hit and scored a run for Morgantown (0-2).
Elkins will face St. Marys for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Sunday at Ritchie County High School.
