The Women Infants and Children Nutrition Program recently announced the winner for its National Nutrition Month celebration.
During March, WIC invited participants and social media partners to enter a contest through Facebook. All fans of the page were automatically entered into a drawing for their own county. Winners were awarded a pizza baking stone. Levi, the son of Kerri Judy, is the National Nutrition Month winner for Randolph County.
Along with the Facebook contest, WIC also visited local daycare centers and assisted children as they planted a "pizza bucket" containing healthy vegetables that eventually van be ingredients for a nutritious vegetable-based pizza. Students will observe and tend the plants as vegetables continue to grow. These activities supported WIC's nutrition education goals encouraging young families to plant at least some vegetables for their own consumption. Local pizza vendors included labels on their pizza boxes with tips on how to make a pizza a part of a healthy meal.
