Group completes successful Girls on the Run season

June 21, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

The Elkins-based Mountain State Girls on the Run program finished up its spring season May 12 at the Roundhouse Rumble in Riverbend Park.

The race recorded 243 finishers, making it one of the largest running events in the area. Barbour County's Scott Nesland and Johanna Biola won the male and female titles at the race, respectively.

The Girls on the Run program is a 12-week course that encourages girls to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Participants train for a 5K race, and the success of the program was apparent by the 92 girls under the age of 10 who finished the race. An additional 55 girls ages 10 to 14 also finished.

The spring 2012 season had programs in nine schools over a four-county area. In Elkins, there were programs at 3rd Ward and North schools and New Life Christian Academy. Beverly Elementary, George Ward and Midland schools also had programs. Tucker Valley in Tucker County, Junior Elementary in Barbour County and Green Bank Elementary in Pocahontas County also had programs this season. A total of 181 girls participated.

The Roundhouse Rumble brings all the programs together. Girls who have trained and made friends within their school's group then get a chance to meet and run participants from around the region.
