Ervin B. Calain, 93, of LaVale, Md., died Saturday, June 23, 2012, in Elmcroft of Martinsburg Assisted Living.
Born July 12, 1918, at Elkins, he was the son of the late Harley Montgomery Calain and Sallie Kimble Calain.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Catherine Ilene O'Brien Calain.
He graduated from Elkins High School in 1937 and received his Bachelor of Science from Davis & Elkins College.
Ervin served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He earned the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge.
Following his discharge, he taught for a while at Allegany High School. He then worked as an engineer for ABL until his retirement.
Ervin was an avid West Virginia University fan, belonged to the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, played basketball and was a student trainer and manager at Davis & Elkins. He enjoyed playing golf at the Maplehurst Country Club.
He was a member of LaVale United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Jane Hamrick of Kentucky; his brother, Jack Calain of Elkins; a niece, Terri O'Brien Cornwell and husband, Jim; nephew, William A. "Rob" O'Brien and wife, Tess; great-nieces and great-nephews, Rebecca G. O'Brien and Will O'Brien, Amy M. Boschen and husband, Kenny, and their children, Matthew, Luke and Blake, Heather L. Hirlinger and husband, Steve, and their son, Alexandre.
Friends will be received at Hafer Funeral Service, P.A.-Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, Md., today from noon until 2 p.m.
The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
