Effie Lena Conn Evans, 90, a resident of Elkins, departed this life late Sunday evening, June 24, 2012, at her home with her family by her side. She had been in declining health.
She was born Thursday, Feb. 9, 1922, at Aurora, a daughter of the late Joseph Marion "Joe" and Bernice Zella Hardesty Conn.
On July 17, 1937, at Red House, Md., she was married to the love of her life, Milan "Skinny" "Brownie" Vane Evans.

Also surviving are two sons, Melvin M. Evans and wife. Gladys, of Henderson, N.C., and Milan Junior Evans and wife, Barbara Lantz Evans, of Beverly, who more recently resided with Effie in her home for the past year; four grandchildren, Richard L. Evans and wife, Shelly, of Clayton, N.C., Christina Dawn Evans Varner and husband, Marty, of Beverly, Shannon Dell Evans Shrader and husband, Sam, of Valley Bend and Bryan Joseph Evans and wife, Melissa, of Beverly; nine great-grandchildren, LeeAnn Caroline Evans of Greensboro, N.C., Asa Cole Evans; and Ian Alexander Evans, both of Clayton, N.C., Chelsea Nicole Scott and Shae Danielle Scott, both of Elkins, Milan James Shrader of Valley Bend, Justin David Shrader of Slatyfork, Korri Leigh Evans and Aubrie Paige Evans, both of Beverly; and one great-great-grandson, Jordan Grant McCune of Elkins.
Effie was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceeding her in death were two sisters, Wilma Hauser Damron and Erma Evans Savage, and two great-grandchildren, Richard L. Evans II and Amanda Hope Evans.
Effie attended the schools of Stemple Ridge and was an avid sports fan, enjoying West Virginia University football and basketball, Pittsburgh Steelers football and NASCAR. Effie and Milan moved to Elkins in 1942, where they raised their family. She took great pride in her family and her home.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Thursday, June 28, at 2 p.m. Pastor Leon Brown will officiate and interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
