Two downtown Elkins streets will be closed today in preparation for classic cars to roll through town. The Mountain State Street Machines Auto Extravaganza will bring hundreds of cars to town throughout the weekend as part of the annual Independence Day celebration.
"We are going to start closing streets at 4 p.m.," Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kate Reed said.
The cruise-in will kick off with cars coming into the downtown area around 5 p.m. today. Railroad Avenue from Fourth Street to Second Street, Third Street from Railroad Avenue to Davis Avenue; Third Street from Davis Avenue to Kerens Avenue; and Third Street from Kerens Avenue to South Henry Avenue will be closed for the event.
Not only will classic cars line the downtown streets, a disc jockey will provide music at the depot throughout the evening as drivers arrive.
At 7 p.m., the Elkins Depot & Welcome Center will host live entertainment by Johnny Cochran and the Trail Blazers in town square. A fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day will light up the sky at dark.
"We will have live music and it is just a fun event," Reed said. "We want everyone to enjoy the Fourth of July celebration."
The Mountain State Street Machine Car Show will open in Elkins City Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Registration for the show will begin at 8 a.m. both days.
The registration fee which includes a participation plaque and entry into drawings for hundreds of dollars in prizes.
