BECKLEY?-Elkins split a pair of contests with Beckley Wednesday in American Legion action.

Post 29 won the first contest 7-0 behind a strong pitching performance from Heath Broughton, who allowed just two hits in a complete-game effort.

Broughton struck out nine and walked just two batters in running his record to 2-1 on the season.

"Heath pitched his best game of the season," Elkins general manager Chris George said. "He's worked his way into pitching shape and he's beginning to hit his groove."

Colby Gainer and Caten Murphy had three hits each for Post 29. Scott Fox added two hits, while Broughton and Cody Gainer had run-producing doubles.

Alex Quick took the loss for Post 32 in 6 1/3 innings pitched.

Heath Utterbeck had two hits and four RBIs to lead Beckley in Game 2.

Jay Webb notched the win for Post 32 in 2 2/3 innings of relief and helped his own cause at the plate with three hits.

James Gainer suffered the loss for Elkins (18-6) in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Murphy collected three hits to lead Post 29 at the dish. Cody Gainer followed with two hits, including a two-run homer.

"We played well in the first game, but came out flat in the second one," George said.

Elkins will entertain Bridgeport on Friday.
