James Edward Petrice Sr., 82, a resident of Beverly, departed this life Friday evening, July 6, 2012, at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center in Elkins. Death was attributed to a short battle with cancer.
He was born Monday, Aug. 26, 1929, at Coalton, a son of the late Nazarene and Florence Kimble Petrice.
On Feb. 13, 1954, at Cumberland, Md., he was married to Betty Lou Phillips Petrice, who preceded him in death on April 5, 2011.
Surviving are one son, Rick Petrice and wife, Dolly, of Beverly; two daughters, Deana Vest and husband, Kenny, Junior, Jacqueline Henderson and husband, Michael, Ravenna, Ohio; two daughters-in- law, Barb Petrice of Coalton and Lillian Petrice of Ravenna; six grandchildren, Stephanie Rasile, Lisa White, Jamey Petrice, Mark Vest, Ceara Vest and Scotty Petrice; five great grandchildren, Rayna and Anthony Brantner, Hailey and Hillary White and Zach Rasile; several step grand and great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are one son, Mark Anthony Petrice, on Feb. 18, 2006; six brothers, Luie, Frank, John, Joe, William "Bill" and Roy "Dempsey"; five sisters, Cecilia "Ditty" Primaveria, Mary Travise, Effie Barkly, Rody Stanton and Rose McMasters; one granddaughter, Misty Petrice Penn.
He attended the schools of Coalton and was Catholic by faith. In 1950 he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving two terms in Korea and was also stationed in Germany. He worked as a coal miner, and also a volunteer fire fighter for many years on the Brady Lake Ohio Fire Department, Midwest prestrest, owner and operator of Petrice Logging and Rail Fence. He was the proprietor of Elk Springs Country Store at Elk River. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He enjoyed watching the History and Western channel.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. On Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, a prayer service will be conducted by The Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, VF. On Wednesday, July 11, 2012, Mr. Petrice will be moved to the Saint Patrick's Catholic Church at Coalton, where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. The Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, VF will be the Presider and interment will follow at the Saint Vincent Cemetery at Kingsville, where H.W. Daniel's Post 29, American Legion and the Tygart's Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
