Elkins wins area Little League title

The Elkins 12-year-old All-Stars erupted for 14 runs over the first two innings to capture the Area 8 Little League tournament with a 19-0 win over Pocahontas County Sunday at River Bend Park.

Elkins, which finished 2-0 in pool play, will now face the runner-up from the south bracket Tuesday at 8 p.m. at River Bend in district play.

Tygarts Valley, which lost an 8-7 decision to Elkins on Friday night, defeated Pocahontas County 21-1 on Saturday and will meet the south champion Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Ean Winans smacked a pair of homers to pace Elkins to the win over Pocahontas County, while Luke Petrice tallied a homer and?Garrett Smyton knocked in three runs.

Tyler Monk went 2-for-4 and Ben McDonald, Chase Reckart, Josh Romero and Read Schumacher added RBIs.

Schumacher earned the win on the mound. Petrice finished in relief.

"I was glad we came out and hit the ball like we did today," Elkins manager Cecil Winans said. "We put some extra work on our hitting and it showed today.

"We need that to continue as we go along further in tournament play."
