WHEELING - Cody Gainer had four hits and Elkins used a five-run seventh inning to down Fairmont 8-5 Thursday in second round action of the American Legion state tournament at Wheeling Jesuit University.
Post 29 improves to 36-7 overall and will face either Fairmont again or South Charleston in semifinal play today at 7 p.m.
With the game tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Elkins scored five runs to build an 8-3 advantage and never look back.
Heath Broughton and Chance Price had two-run singles in the frame, while Scott Fox had a run-producing single.
"We got some key hits in the seventh inning," Elkins general manager Chris George said. "Hopefully the hitting will continue throughout the rest of the tournament."
Post 17 jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, before Elkins scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead.
Ryne Bonnell came up big in the third inning with a two-run triple. Fox added a sacrifice fly in the set.
Bonnell finished with two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for Post 29, which improves to 2-0 in tourney play. Fox, Broughton and Price had one hit and two RBIs each.
Cody Gainer notched the win for Post 29 in 7 1/3 innings of work. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out one.
James Gainer pitched 1 2/3 innings of work to pick up the save. He gave up no runs on two hits and struck out one.
Brent Osborne took the loss for Fairmont in six innings of work. He gave up seven runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out four.
Joe Casalinova had two hits and two RBIs, while Trevor Malnick had two hits and knocked in a run for Fairmont.
"I thought Cody really pitched well for only making his second appearance of the season," George said. "He did what we asked him to do and he also came up big at the plate.
"We just need to continue to hit the ball and our pitching has to be there as well. It has been a great team effort so far through two games in the tourney."
