An Elkins resident has been arrested for allegedly writing worthless checks to at least three area businesses.
Police arrested Thomas Hanna, 42, of Elkins, on Tuesday, said Sgt. G.L. Stalnaker with the Elkins Detachment of the West Virginia State Police.
Stalnaker said Hanna allegedly wrote worthless checks to Appalachian Animal Shelter, Cupp's Furniture and the Hampton Inn for approximately $9,000. He said Hanna is being charged with one felony count of writing a worthless check, one felony count of obtaining services under false pretenses and two misdemeanor counts of writing worthless checks.
"He was contacted about one of the checks and then wrote more," Stalnaker said. "He is facing a few years in prison (if convicted)."
An employee with the Randolph County Magistrate Court said Hanna has been arraigned and was released on a $12,500 cash or surety bond. A preliminary hearing for Hanna had not been scheduled yet.
