United Way of Randolph County is showcasing a quilt that will be auctioned off during its annual Kick-off Auction set for Aug. 25.

The quilt, crafted by several area quilters, is on display at various buildings in Elkins. The quilt was first on display at Citizens Bank of West Virginia. It currently is featured at Davis Trust Co., where it will be through Friday, and it will be in the Jennings Randolph Federal Building Lobby Monday through Aug. 24.

The Elkins Sewing Center sponsored an annual United Way quilt square contest earlier this spring. The winners of the quilt square competition for pieced square were first place, Cherie Rike; second place, Nancy Goerlich; and third place, Pattie Nestor; and the winners for applique were first place, Jo Conway; second place, Nancy Bartlett; and third place, Elaine Griesel.

The quilt has been crafted by many area quilters and will be auctioned during United Way’s annual Kick-Off Auction set for Aug. 25.

The quilt top was sewn by Donna Rozich of Elkins Sewing Center and the quilting was done by Patsy Turner. Sue Pifer, owner of the Elkins Sewing Center, said the quilt's colors were chosen to be reminiscent of Civil War fabrics while the block designs are more contemporary, with more complex geometric patterns and materials that have been machine sewn.

The 50th anniversary Live United Kick-Off auction will begin with a 5K Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. at the Elkins YMCA. The auction will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with thousands of dollars in merchandise from local merchants, organizations and artisans up for bid. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Proceeds from the auction will support the 26 partnering community agencies. Some of the items that will be up for bid at the event will be on display at the Jennings Randolph Federal Building Lobby Monday through Aug. 24.
