Workers recently broke ground on the new Veterans' and Miners' Memorial Park near U.S. 219 in Thomas.
Local nonprofit group New Historic Thomas, in conjunction with the city, spearheaded the design and planning phases of the Memorial Park. The planning began last fall as part of a comprehensive revitalization program.
Building of the park's structural features should be completed in September, with installation of plants and footpaths set for the spring. Local landscaping company Canaan Valley Lawn and Landscape was selected to do the major construction features.
The park is located at the site of Old Third Street, adjacent to Thomas City Hall and the commercial Front Street district. The design aims to accent the existing Civilian Conservation Corps retaining wall, connect existing walkways and create a pleasing outdoor space for reflection and remembrance.
The Veterans' and Miners' Memorial Park would not be possible without the generous participation of donors. Representatives of the city of Thomas and New Historic Thomas expressed gratitude for the interest in beautifying the city and honoring veterans and miners. Major donors for the work include the American Legion, the Hotel/Motel Tax Fund and a private citizen.
