Davis & Elkins opens its season on Friday

The Davis & Elkins College volleyball team opens up their 2012 season Friday at Gannon University in Erie (Pa.).

The Lady Senators return four seniors off of last year's 12-27 season for first-year coach Ashley Pappas.

Pappas takes over for former coach Latonia Allen, who took another job in Tennessee.

Pappas spent the last four years as an assistant coach at West Virginia University.

She also played college volleyball at WVU from 1994-97.

"I'm excited about the opportunity of being a head coach,"?Pappas said. "I'm thankful for D&E in giving me the chance."

Meaghan Emery, Brandi Brown, Heather Zapf and Brittany Anderson are the four seniors for this year.

Zapf is the top player back in kills from last season with 308, while Brandi Brown followed with 253 kills from last season.

"We're expecting these four girls to be leaders for us this season," Pappas said. "We need them to have good years for us in the upcoming season."

Junior Kelsey Richards, along with sophomores Erin Legge and Nicole Miller, also return with playing experience for the Lady Senators.

The Lady Senators brought in four freshmen for this season.

The four girls include, Kayla Huckaby, Natalie Mathieu, Haylee Murray and Brittany Behensky.

Huckaby played high school volleyball at Trinity High School in Morgantown, Mathieu is coming from Harlem High school in Loves Park (Ill.), Murray played volleyball at Faquier High School in Warranton (Va.) and Behensky is from Lakeside Christian High School out of Dunedin (Fla.).

Murray and Mathieu are expecting to see time immediately for this season.

"I think these four girls will be key impacts for us this season," Pappas said. "I'm excited with who we got in a short period of time."

"I'm happy with how summer practices have gone and our preseason," Pappas said.

"The girls are ready to get their season under way and see how things go."

Davis & Elkins will open up its home portion of the schedule on Sept. 12 against Fairmont State College.
