BUCKHANNON - Buckhannon-Upshur started the 2012 volleyball season on a strong note Wednesday night, defeating Big 10 Conference opponent Robert C. Byrd in straight games.
The Lady Bucs won the match 25-17, 25-23 and 25-23.
"It feels great to get that first win under our belts," first-year head coach Sheena Westfall said. "I was very happy with our effort. We made some mistakes in several phases, but you will have that early in the season. But I felt we were able to overcome that with our energy.

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Courtney Reed goes up for a spike as a Robert C. Byrd defender moves toward the net Wednesday in the Lady Buccaneers’ season-opening win.
"I feel that we made a strong improvement in overall effort. The girls never gave up on any ball."
After producing a solid 8-point advantage in Game 1, the Lady Bucs had to fight off a strong rally from the Lady Eagles to snag a tight in Game 2.
Robert C. Byrd produced a late move in Game 3 and held a 23-21 lead in the game. The Lady Eagles had the Lady Bucs on the brink of forcing a fourth game, but Buckhannon-Upshur rebounded to score the next four points and close the match.
"After a timeout, we talked about calming down and staying focused," Westfall said. "They did a good job of executing the first pass and finishing out the plays at the net."
Service points were the only statistics provided, but the Lady Bucs had a balanced night in terms of service production. B-U's Sydney Bush produced nine points off serve, followed by Sarah Gllespie and Lindsay Wagoner with seven each. Sarah Ling and McKenzie Leigh chipped in with six points each, and Courtney Reed tallied four.
Buckhannon-Upshur will play another conference contest on Thursday when it entertains Lincoln for a 7:30 p.m matchup.
