Fairmont State student becomes festival royalty

Katelynn Marie Torrence, of Valley Bend, has been chosen princess in the 76th Mountain State Forest Festival by Board President Mark Tomblyn.

Torrence is the daughter of Angie and Deck Scott of Valley Bend and Jim Torrence of Franklinville, N.J. She is the granddaughter of Lucy Shannon and great-granddaughter of Juanita Poe, both of Elkins. She has one brother, Christian Scott.

Torrence is a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School with the class of 2010. In high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, RAZE and Pride Club and DECA. She was the recipient of the PROMISE Scholarship and the RAZE Scholarship. In the fall of 2011, she made the dean's list at Pierpont Community and Technical College.

She currently is pursuing a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Fairmont State University, and she plans to find a career helping people. This busy young lady works as a store clerk in the summers at Country Convenience in Valley Bend, and during the school year, she works as a child care provider at Learning Land Daycare and Preschool in Fairmont.

On Oct. 5, Torrence and 37 other princesses will join the rest of the Royal Court of the Mountain State Forest Festival on coronation hill on the campus of Davis & Elkins College.
