EMS sweeps contests; Tygarts Valley, Tucker roll to football victories

The Elkins Middle School boys and girls soccer teams posted wins over Lumberport Wednesday at River Bend Park.

The Lady Hornets earned a 4-3 victory in the first contest, while the EMS?boys completed the sweep with a 7-1 win in the second game.

The Elkins girls team will return to action Thursday at Mountaineer Middle.

The Hornets' boys squad will visit rival Buckhannon-Upshur the same day.

Middle School Football

Tygarts Valley 52,

Belington 34

PHILIPPI?- Ronnie Nicholas had 101 yards rushing and one touchdown to help lead Tygarts Valley to a 52-34 win over Belington Wednesday night.

Nicholas also had a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as the Bulldogs stormed out to a 24-8 lead after one quarter of play.

Marcus Reynolds added 74 yards rushing and a touchdown for Tygarts Valley (2-0), while Thomas Tenney had 65 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

Rece Wamsley completed 2-of-5 passes for 28 yards and two scores for the Bulldogs. Zac McCauley and Jace Stanley had touchdown catches from Wamsley.

Caleb Riggleman had three tackles and returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown to lead Tygarts Valley's defense.

McCauley also had an interception in the contest, while Stanley blocked a punt and Tristan Dumire recovered a fumble.

Dumire, Stanley, Nicholas, Tenney and Jerad Taylor had three tackles each for the Bulldogs, who led 46-22 at the half.

Strong offensive line play from P.J. Brady, Darrell Martin and Evan Currence contributed to Tygarts Valley's 279 yards rushing in the contest.

Mark McVicker led the Hawks (0-2) with 114 yards rushing and two touchdowns. McVicker also had an 85-yard kickoff return.

Belington quarterback David Shriver had a 65-yard touchdown pass to Jake Carr.

The Hawks will entertain Tucker Valley on Monday.

The Bulldogs will travel to Elkins for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday.

Tucker Valley 52,

Pendleton County 6

PARSONS - Ethan Crosten had 96 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns to lead Tucker Valley past Pendleton County 52-6 Wednesday night.

Justin Fike added 51 yards on the ground, while Joey Howell had two scores for the Wildcats including a 75-yard kickoff return.

Connor Nestor had a rushing score for the Wildcats (2-1), while James Baker had seven tackles to lead Tucker Valley's defense.

Tucker will travel to Belington on Monday for a 7 p.m. contest.

High School Golf

The Elkins High School golf team defeated Robert C. Byrd in a dual match Wednesday afternoon in Big 10 Conference action at the Elks Country Club.

Elkins won the match with a 165. Robert C. Byrd carded a 166 for the day.

Braden Hammond shot a 38 to earn low-medalist honors for the Tigers.

Alex Baird had a 41, while Kelsi Trippett and Kollin Hopwood both shot 43. Kole Hopwood scored a 45 for Elkins.

Travis Riddle and Jeremy Thomas both shot a 41 to pace the Eagles.

Elkins will travel to the Clarksburg Country Club on Monday for the Big 10 Conference championships.

TV?PLACES?FOURTH: The Tygarts Valley High School golf team placed fourth in a five-team match Wednesday at the Pocahontas County Country Club.

Richwood won the competition with a 170. Bath County followed with a 191, while Webster County shot a 192. Tygarts Valley (194) and Pocahontas County (197) rounded out the field.

Ryan Bennett and Mason Mullens both shot a 38 to earn low-medalist honors for Richwood.

Noah Burns shot a 46 for Bath County.

Hunter Williams hit a 44 to lead the way for Webster County.

Jared Wegman had a 46 to lead the Bulldogs. Casey Martel followed with a 50 and Alex Hinzman carded a 52 for TVHS.

Pocahontas County was led by Cody Sharp's 46.

Tygarts Valley will host Webster County and Petersburg Monday at 4 p.m.
