Mr. Preston John "Pres" Kerns, 83, a well-known auctioneer and a lifelong resident of Montrose, passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 12, 2012, in Good Samaritan Center at Belington with his caregiver, Cindy, at his side. He went peacefully and had been in declining health. He is now free from pain and resting in the arms of the Lord.

He was born Aug. 7, 1929, at Elkins, a son of the late John and Hettie Kerns.

He was married to Lissie Frances Wileman Kerns, who preceded him in death April 19, 2009.

Surviving are his daughter, Leigh Ann and her daughter, Amanda; his son, Preston James and wife, Tammy, and their children, Preston and Natasha; a sister, Daisy Hawkins of Beverly; a brother, Charles Kerns and wife, "Dot," of Rhode Island; and five stepgrandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were brothers, James and Willard; and sisters, Susan, Nellie, Opal Elsie and Bessie.

He never forgot anyone and always remembered everyone greeting them with a smile.

"Pres" is survived by a loving caregiver who took good care of him. Her dog, Co Co, was his buddy; and he loved them very much. "Pres" will be forever loved and missed by Sweeti, Cindy and Co Co will miss hislove and support. He will be remembered fondly for his sparkling blue eyes and his great sense of humor. Heaven received a special angel. "Pres" was employed by Valley Supply Co. for many years and the United States Forest Service, where he made lasting friendships. He called square dancing with Philmore Kelley at the Mountain State Forest Festival many years ago. He loved auctioneering, especially cattle auctions and loved meeting new people and making new friends.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert L. Lowther officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman where full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite by members of the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
