TENNERTON -Buckhannon-Upshur connected on five second-half goals to down Fairmont Senior 5-1 Thursday night in Big 10 Conference action.
Coach Tom Hasbrouck's Lady Bucs outshot the Lady Polar Bears 17-1 in the game, including 10-0 in the first half. B-U came up empty in the first half, however, and the game was scoreless at intermission.
"We were putting pressure on them and creating some solid opportunities," Hasbrouck said. "We just could not finish."
Two of the Lady Bucs' shots found the cross bar, while two were missed at point-blank range. One goal was nullified due to an offside call.
"I felt that we got stronger as the game went along," Hasbrouck said. "We picked up the intensity and you could see the confidence level go up once we started scoring some goals."
Emily Godwin broke the ice 17 minutes into the second half off an assist from Hannah Stankus. From there the flood gates opened.
Brooklyn Waddell scored six minutes later, finding the net off a pass from Godwin. Fairmont Senior answered quickly, scoring its lone goal of the night just seconds later with Alyssa Link scoring off a Maddie Craig assist.
There would be no Lady Polar Bears comeback, though, as Stankus scored two goals over the next 14 minutes. Godwin then closed the scoring in the final minute, delivering off a combination from Waddell and Lindsey Beets.
"Our goalkeeper Kelsey Hinzman did a good job of controlling the box, and we got a great effort from Erin Beer," Hasbrouck said.
Buckhannon-Upshur, which entered the game ranked No. 4 in the state, improved to 9-1 on the season. Fairmont Senior, No. 2 in Class AA, fell to 5-2.
Buckhannon-Upshur will travel to Washington on Saturday for a non-conference contest.
