The Upshur County CEOS invites all to attend the Breast Cancer Awareness Day Ceremony at Jawbone Park in Buckhannon. The event will be held on Monday, Oct. 1, beginning at 11:30 a.m. with a light lunch. The Breast Cancer Program will follow at noon.
A breast cancer survivor will tell of her struggles dealing with a cancer diagnosis as well as motivating those attending to take advantage of early screenings.
Michael Rollins, M.D. OBGYN, and Susan Long, M.D. General Surgeon, both from St. Joseph's Physicians Medical Group, will give information concerning the importance of early detection of breast cancer, through mammograms and breast self exams. Information concerning treatment of breast cancer, and what to expect if surgery is required will also be addressed. Schedule permitting, Dr. Kimberly Farry, MD-OBGYN from Associates' for Women's Health, will also be presenting information on the symptoms of breast cancer.
Rock Cave CEOS Debbie Page and Avis Bowles set up their club’s window display at Main Street Formalwear for Upshur County CEOS week from Sept. 2 to 8.
Currently, the best method to reduce deaths due to breast cancer is through early detection of the disease. The American Cancer Society recommends a yearly mammogram for women over 40. A woman has a one in eight lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and a one in 35 chance of dying from the disease.
A special invitation is given to all breast cancer survivors and they will be presented with a small token of appreciation for attending.
The goal of the breast cancer committee is to work with the health care community to protect women and save lives. This event is sponsored by the Upshur County CEOS, American Cancer Society, local health care providers, the Fred Brooks Garden Club. Breast Cancer Awareness Wreaths will be presented to: the Upshur County Courthouse; Buckhannon City Hall; St. Joseph's Hospital; Buckhannon Medical Center; Tri-County Health Clinic; Upshur County Health Department; and Associates for Women's Health.
Door prizes will be given followed by a balloon launch.
In addition to the Breast Cancer Awareness activities at the park on Monday, there will be a table display in the Upshur County Public Library, and ribbon wreaths placed in each Upshur County Post Office during the month of October. Please take the opportunity to learn more about the importance of early detection of breast cancer.
