Alderson-Broaddus College is pleased to announce that Dr. Hooi Yin Boey, piano professor, has been awarded "Teacher of the Year" from the West Virginia Music Teachers Association (WVMTA). All music teachers are eligible statewide for this award.
WVMTA is an organization of teachers in West Virginia and adjoining states who are dedicated to promoting music education. Founded in 1966 in Morgantown, the purpose of WVMTA is committed to advancing the value of music study and music making to society and to supporting the professionalism of music teachers.
"I have to admit that I was a bit stunned when I learned about the nomination and the award, as I feel that there are many music teachers who are much more experienced than I am," Boey said. "I am deeply honored to receive this recognition and am sincerely grateful to all of my colleagues and my students, both here at Alderson-Broaddus College and throughout West Virginia Music Teachers Association."
Boey is an associate professor of music at Alderson-Broaddus College. A native of Malaysia, Dr. Boey earned her associate degree in piano performance at Sedaya College in Kuala Lumpur. She then earned a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in piano performance at West Virginia University. This fall marks the beginning of her eighth year of teaching at A-B College.
She is active as recitalist and accompanist and has given scholarly presentations at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) National Convention and at the West Virginia Music Education Association State Convention. As a collaborative artist, she performed in the 2010 ensemble debut of Alderson-Broaddus College's concert choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
She also serves as adjudicator at piano competitions, including MTNA events in West Virginia, Ohio, and Virginia. Her students have won numerous awards in performance competitions, including those sponsored by the West Virginia Music Teachers Association (WVMTA). Dr. Boey has been an active member of MTNA and WVMTA since 1998 and has served on the WVMTA Administrative Board since 2005.
