BUCKHANNON - West Virginia Wesleyan's volleyball team was in need of a victory after fighting through a brutal non-conference schedule to start the season.

Coach Jackie Murphy's Lady Bobcats received that wish Saturday afternoon, earning a hard fought four-game victory over visiting Concord, 25-23, 25-14, 23-25, 25-20.

"Tonight was a great win for us," Murphy said. "First of all, our fan base was top notch. Our crowd really intensified our intensity.

"We really enjoy having the support from all the Wesleyan students, parents and community."

After dominating game two to take what looked like a commanding 2-0 lead, the Lady Bobcats could not close the deal in game three, as Concord battled to gain the two-point win and stay in the match. But Wesleyan regrouped to make the necessary plays down the stretch to seal the win.

Korin Wengryn led the offense with 19 kills and five blocks, followed by Erin Bond's five blocks and six kills. Sarah Crowder was also a finisher at the net, collecting eight kills.

Renata Comparini produced 30 digs, and was complemented on the defensive end by Courtney Browning with nine digs. Setter Casey Pattyn was solid with 37 assists and Meaghan Malloy led the service game, drilling a match-high four aces.

Wesleyan ended an eight-match losing streak with the win, raising its overall record to 5-9. Concord falls to 3-10.

The Lady Bobcats hit the road for their next contest, traveling to the University of Charleston on Wednesday.
