Martha Barrett Williams Alday, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully at her home in Fernandina Beach, Fla. Monday, Sept. 10, 2012

Martha was born Sept. 3, 1922, at Elkins, to the late Phil and Ruth Troutman Williams.

Preceding her in death was her brother, Phil Holland Williams.

Martha is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Robert Norman; their three children, Phil Holland Alday (Catherine) of Valdosta, Ga., Judith Barrett Hardwick (James) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Elizabeth Dare Bartelt (Ted) of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Dr. Phil Holland Alday Jr. (Dr. Angela), Robert Norman Alday II (Rachel), Raymond Truitt Alday, John Austin Alday, Elizabeth Barrett Oswald (Judson), James Osburn Hardwick III, Parker Alday Hardwick and Elizabeth Dare Bartelt; and a great-grandson, James Barrett Oswald.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School class of 1939 and attended Sweetbriar College in Lynchburg, Va., then graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science. Martha was a devoted wife and mother who loved her husband, children and grandchildren very much. Having lived in Fernandina Beach for the past 58 years, her life was full of many accomplishments.

Since moving here, they have been members of First Presbyterian Church where she loved and worked for the Lord as an elder, past president of Presbyterian Women, Sunday school teacher and Martha Circle. Martha was also the first president of Fernandina Beach Ladies Golf Association and a member of Magnolia Garden Club. She was an avid rose gardener and gifted artist that enjoyed sharing her roses and paintings with family and friends.

The family will receive friends at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church Friday, Sept. 28, from noon to 1:30 p.m. On Friday, at 1:30 p.m., a funeral service will be conducted at the church. The Rev. Dr. Peter A. Vial will officiate, and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contribution to Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, 450 S. Randolph Ave., Elkins, WV 26241.
