Many Mountain State Forest Festival attendees like to conclude their weekend of activities at the festival, which kicks off this Saturday and continues to Oct. 7, with a brunch at Graceland Inn before they leave town. Elkins residents, along with their festival guests, also like to eat there.
Once again, College Aid is sponsoring a brunch buffet at this grand former home of Sen. Henry Gassaway Davis. It will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 7.
Reservations with Graceland Inn are requested by calling 304-637-1600. Tables are available indoors or outdoors. On sunny, crisp days, many prefer to eat on the porch in order to enjoy the view of the town and mountains beyond.
Included in the menu are tossed garden salad with choice of dressing; pasta salad; scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage; blintz with peaches, strawberries and whipped cream; carved grilled flank steak with spicy barbecue sauce; three-cheese stuffed chicken breast with cream sauce; whipped potatoes and fiesta green beans; orange cake, fruits of the forest pie and carrot cake.
Proceeds from the brunch will benefit College Aid, a women's organization founded in 1931 to help furnish and maintain the dormitories on Davis & Elkins College campus. For many years both Halliehurst and Graceland housed students, and purchases of lamps, rugs, curtains, and other needed items for these buildings are recorded in College Aid minutes. The club has given funds especially to help restore and renovate Halliehurst, the large home built by Sen. Stephen Benton Elkins, where the Forest Festival public reception following the coronation of Queen Sylvia is held.
The members meet monthly to enjoy programs presented by faculty, students, and members of the college administration, as well as to hear speakers from the larger community.
The aim of the organization is to foster good campus-community relationships and to aid the college whenever called upon to do so. Officers for 2012-2013 are President Dr. Jean Minnick, Vice President Arlena Straw, Secretary Jane Trimble and Treasurer Robin Price. Guests and prospective members are welcome at meetings, and anyone wishing to join College Aid can contact one of the officers.
