Visitors are invited to slice into a Mountain State Forest Festival classic, the Championship Lumberjack Contest.
The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. Oct. 6. Registration is $15 per event, and it begins at 7 a.m. in Davis & Elkins College Amphitheater.
Individual events include wood chopping, tree felling, ax throwing and chain saw contests. Two-person sawing contests also are slated - there will be two-man cross-cut sawing, Jack-and-Jill (man and woman) crosscut-sawing and Jill-and-Jill crosscut-sawing.

Contestants participate in the Jack-and-Jill crosscut sawing competition during 2011’s festival.
Prize money ranges from $25 to $200 for the top eight finishers in each category. While most events are open to all, two contests - the springboard competition and the Hard Hit Classic - are limited to the pros and are by invitation only, said MSFF Assistant Director Todd Riggleman.
"A lot of them, this is what they do for a living - maybe not with a double-bit ax anymore," Riggleman said. "But a lot of them are timber cutters or loggers for their livelihood, so it gives them a chance to kind of show off their profession."
Plenty of people show up to watch the competition because they see it as a great way to start their Saturday, Riggleman said.
