EHS soccer teams sweep RCB; TV spikers win

Hailea Harper's late goal lifted Elkins to a 1-0 win over Robert C. Byrd Thursday night in Big 10 Conference action at EHS.

The Lady Tigers, who improved to 5-9-2 overall with the win, held a 17-10 advantage in shots on goal.

Elkins goal keeper Charlie George had eight saves in net to preserve the shutout.

"We had a lot of chances, but just couldn't get anything to go," Elkins coach Scott Cutright said. "Our defense really played well and Charlie George was great in goal for us."

Elkins will travel to Washington on Saturday before beginning sectional tournament action Wednesday at home against Hampshire.

B-U 4, Bridgeport 2

BRIDGEPORT?- Hannah Stankus scored a pair of goals to power Buckhannon-Upshur to a 4-2 win over Bridgeport Friday night in Big 10 Conference action.

With the win, the Lady Bucs (18-1) claimed the conference championship.

Jessica Feronti and Brooklyn Waddell had the other goals for Buckhannon-Upshur, which held a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal.

"This was what the conference championship game was supposed to be like," B-U coach Tom Hasbrouck said. "It was back and forth early and then we started to take control later in the game. I'm very proud of how we played."

Kelsey Hinzman had three saves in goal for the Lady Bucs, who will travel to University Saturday. B-U will host Lewis County for sectional tourney play on Wednesday.

Boys Soccer

Elkins 3, RCB 2

Cord Elmer scored three goals to lead Elkins to a 3-2 win over Robert C. Byrd Thursday night in Big 10 Conference action at EHS.

With the win the Tigers improve to 8-7-2 on the season. The Eagles held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Kevin Steele and John Clark had goals for RCB.

Tyler Gray had five saves in net for Elkins.

"We started a little slow, but developed a rhythm later in the game," Elkins coach Andy Montgomery said. "Cord Elmer finished well tonight to power us through this game."

Elkins will travel Hedgesville on Saturday before opening section play Wednesday at home against Lewis County.

Philip Barbour 2, Grafton 0

GRAFTON?- Quinton Mouser scored two goals to lead Philip Barbour to a 2-0 win over Grafton Thursday in Big 10 Conference action.

Tyler Schiefelbein recorded his fifth shutout of the season in goal for the Colts (10-8-1).

Philip Barbour will open sectional tournament play Tuesday at home against either Petersburg or Grafton.

Prep Volleyball

Tygarts Valley 3, SH 0

MILL?CREEK - Tygarts Valley defeated South Harrison in three games Thursday night in non-conference action.

The Lady Bulldogs (7-4) won the match 25-22, 25-21 and 25-23.

Shanda Howell had six aces and five kills to lead Tygarts Valley. Charity Lower finished with 16 set assists.

Tygarts Valley will entertain Pocahontas on Tuesday.

RCB?3, Elkins 0

Elkins fell to RCB?in three games Thursday night in Big 10 Conference action.

The Lady Eagles won the match 25-20, 25-16 and 25-18.

Delaney Johnson led the Lady Tigers (4-8) with five kills, nine attacks and two blocks. Kaitlyn Miller added 11 kills and eight assists.

Elkins will entertain Bridgeport on Tuesday.
