Church Women United was created years ago to promote peace around the world during World War II.
It is difficult to believe and understand that after 70 years, Church Women United is still working toward developing peace and understanding for all nations. The economical stability that provides a base for opportunity remains allusive for millions. Neighborhoods echo with violence that mocks the group's goal of promoting policies and practices of peace. The physical environment is increasingly unstable. Health and well-being elude many people.
Elkins Church Women United will celebrate World Community Day with a luncheon at noon Nov. 2 at First Baptist Church on Randolph Avenue.
Attendees are asked to bring either sandwiches or salad to share, and the Baptist women will provide dessert and drinks. After the meal, there will be a World Community Day program titled "Abiding in Community," with a guest speaker from Mountain Hospice.
Following that, there will be a business meeting to elect 2012 officers and decide the 2013 event locations.
Attendees also are asked to bring food items and/or hygiene products to the meeting to be donated to Catholic Community Services, as well as any UNICEF donations.
Church Women United is an ecumenical organization. It has a long history of inviting women of diverse races, cultures and traditions to draw together into a Christian fellowship. Its members recognize how God brings people together from many places, generations, cultures and faiths to become "One in Christ's Love."
