Venison 101 class scheduled at Camp Kidd

October 30, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

Experts from the West Virginia University Extension Service and the local community will come together Nov. 13 to help hopeful hunters learn the how-tos of safely handling venison for their freezers at a workshop at Camp Kidd. The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. with Wildlife Expert Sheldon Owen providing valuable information on management of the deer herd, deer diseases and the current population. After lunch, which will include many venison recipe samplings, the workshop will continue with a demonstration of identifying, processing and packaging cuts. The course will wrap up about 3 p.m. The cost of the workshop is $5 per person to help pay for class expenses, and pre-registration is required.

WVU Extension Agent Jennifer Poling said, "The timing of the course falls just before the start of gun season here in West Virginia, so we're hoping that hunters and anyone helping prepare the meat for consumption or storage will take advantage of the class." Pre-registration is required for the course by Nov. 9. Participants must contact the Tucker County WVU Extension Office at 304-478-2949, ext. 209 or send email to Jennifer.Poling@mail.wvu.edu to register.
