Similar offenses to clash

MORGANTOWN - There will be numerous similarities on offense between West Virginia and Oklahoma State when they clash Saturday in a Big 12 football game at Stillwater, Okla.

That's because Dana Holgorsen, the Mountaineers' head coach, was the architect as the Cowboys' offensive coordinator in 2010 before coming to WVU.

He also was offensive coordinator at other schools that played against Oklahoma State during the past decade or so.

"When I first got to Oklahoma State, I was pretty familiar with the scheme there. We started playing OSU when I was assistant coach at Texas Tech in 2001-02"

Holgerson also faced the Cowboys in his two years as offensive coordinator at Houston. So he knows a lot about that school from a culture and coach's standpoint.

But it was in 2010 that Holgorson left a lasting impression on Oklahoma State as its offensive coordinator.

His offensive overhaul led the nation in total offense during the regular season and finished No. 2 in passing and No. 3 in total and scoring offense.

The Cowboys averaged 520.23 yards per game in total offense, including 365.9 passing yards and 44.23 points per game.

That was after Holgorsen's first and only season at Oklahoma State in 2010. The Cowboys' offense ranked No. 61 nationally the previous year (2009) , before the concerned WVU head coach arrived in Stillwater.

In 2010, Holgorsen was ranked a finalist for the Frank Broyles Award, signifying the top assistant in college football. He also was tagged by as national offensive coordinator of the year.
