Hundreds of local hunters will be successful in bagging bucks this year and we look forward to seeing them in The Inter-Mountain's annual Big Buck Contest.
Antlered deer that meet the three-point standard and are killed during the archery season or the regular firearms deer season are eligible.
First-, second- and third-place winners will be declared in Adult Male, Adult Female and Youth divisions (junior license or mentored youth hunters), with the first-place winners featured on the cover of the Big Buck edition to be published after the season ends.
Winners will also receive gift certificates from sponsoring advertisers.
As always, photos of all deer entered in the contest will be published in the special section.
"Deer hunters love to talk about how they bagged a big deer, so here's their opportunity to really prove it," Inter-Mountain Sports Editor Edgar Kelley said. "It's a great way to display their trophy bucks in a public forum. Plus they get a chance to come away with some great prizes."
To qualify for the contest, deer must be taken in Randolph, Upshur, Barbour, Tucker, Pocahontas, Lewis, Pendleton, Hardy or Grant counties, or by residents of those counties hunting anywhere in West Virginia. Bucks shot in other states may not be entered.
To enter, we prefer you bring the whole deer - properly tagged - but the head and hide are acceptable as long as the tag is attached. All deer must have been killed legally according to the West Virginia Wildlife Code. Deer must be presented at The Inter-Mountain, 520 Railroad Ave., Elkins, for measurement.
Hours for deer measurement from Nov. 19 to Dec. 3 are as follows:
Monday through Friday, you may bring in a deer anytime between from 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
On Saturdays, measurements will be taken from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and from 1 to 4 p.m.s
On Sundays, deer taken on Saturday may be brought in from 3 to 6 p.m. only.
Entries are accepted only at the listed times on Saturday or Sunday.
If you are coming on a weekday during the listed hours, or on Saturdays between 1 and 4 p.m. or Sundays between 3 and 6 p.m., please bring your deer to the employee entrance at the rear of the building that faces Go-Mart.
On Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., please bring your deer to the Inter-Mountain's advertising building, which faces Walgreens.
Contest entries will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 3.
Each deer's score will be the sum of the rack's outside spread, number of points big enough to hold a ring, and base circumference of both antlers. The outside spread will be used as a tie-breaker.
