BAKER - Shawn Skovron completed 18-of-27 passes for 362 yards and five scores to lead East Hardy past two-time defending state champion Wheeling Central 60-34 Saturday in Class A state playoff action.
The Cougars advance to second round play and will travel to Magnolia Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
Skovron added 68 yards and two touchdowns on the ground on 15 carries. He also had three two- point conversions for East Hardy (10-1), which led 22-20 at halftime.
"This was a signature win for us," East Hardy coach Chad Williams said. "We played really well, and if we continue this kind of play, we will be hard to beat the rest of the way out."
Josh Parker set a school record and a first-round playoff mark with eight catches for 232 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars, who entered the playoffs seeded No. 7.
"Josh really had a good game today," Williams said. "He really stepped up big for us and that's what we needed."
Levi Beck had 39 yards rushing on eight carries for East Hardy. Beck also had an 82-yard kickoff return and a 23-yard touchdown reception in the contest.
Chris Burch had 238 yards and four touchdowns on 35 carries for the No. 10 Maroon Knights.
Burch also completed 9-of-17 passing for 114 yards.
"Chris is one best athletes that I have ever coached against," Williams said. "He is a great player and we had a hard time stopping him."
Wheeling Central finished the season with a 7-4 record.
Besides having a huge game catching the football, Parker also had an interception for a touchdown for the Cougars.
Magnolia, which East Hardy will face next, is the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. The Blue Eagles are 10-1 on the season and defeated Williamstown 34-7 to move on.
