Mr. Jody Robert Coontz, 41, a resident of 127 Easy Street in Elkins, departed this life Monday, Nov. 12, 2012. He had been in his usual health, and death was unexpected.
He was born June 22, 1971, at Portsmouth, Va., a son of the late William J. "Bill" Coontz and Sarah M. (Beattie) Coontz, who survives in Elkins.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, Tim Coontz and wife, Cindy, of Belington and Dr. Todd Coontz and wife, Dana, of Aiken, S.C.; two nephews, Landon Coontz, and Conner Coontz; three nieces, Cori Coontz, Amy Coontz and Ashley Coontz; and one great-nephew, Gunnar Coontz.
Mr. Coontz attended the schools of Barbour County and graduated from The Hart Chapel Christian Academy. Mr. Coontz also graduated from Fairmont State College where he received his teaching degree. Jody had formerly attended Destiny Tabernacle of Praise which is now New Direction Church, and he had been employed as a substitute school teacher. He was an avid musician and loved athletics, especially the game of basketball and had a deep desire to teach junior high and high school age students.
At the request of the deceased, his remains will be cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. today at New Direction Church in Elkins (formerly Destiny Tabernacle of Praise) with Jody's brother Dr. Todd Coontz officiating.
