Herman Kenneth "Kenny" Reed, 87, a resident and former city councilman of Elkins, departed this life late Wednesday evening, Nov. 14, 2012, in Nella's Inc. of Crystal Springs.
He was born Thursday, Aug. 27, 1925, at Belington, a son of the late Herman M. and Desta Thomas Reed.
On April 29, 1950, at Belington, he was married to Norma Lee Murray Reed, who preceded him in death June 15, 2011.
Surviving are two sons, Murray K. Reed and wife, Sherry, of Elkins and V. Kevin Reed and wife, Karen, of Moorefield; four grandchildren, Lauren Walls and husband, Ray, Andrew and wife, Heidi, Korey and Karson Reed; two great-grandsons, Colton Walls and Samuel Reed; great-granddaughter, Ava Reed; two stepgrandchildren, Andrea Rush and husband, Christopher, and Patrick Terrano and wife, Sara; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Riley, Dakota and Christopher Terrano. He is preceded in death by one brother, Jesse Floyd Reed.
He was a graduate of Belington High School and Davis & Elkins College and had done graduate studies, with a focus on hospital management at Indiana and Trinity Universities. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the World War II era, including the Normandy Invasion, and he received the Bronze Service Star for participation in the European Theater. He was employed at Memorial General Hospital, having worked there for over 35 years and last served as director of personnel. Kenny was a life member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647, 40 & 8 Voiture 1117 and Elkins Lions Club. He was past president of the Elkins Kiwanis Club, was awarded the Kiwanis Golden Circle Award and had received numerous awards from the Hospital Financial Management Association. He also served on the advisory board of Youth Health Service and was a member of Beta Alpha Beta Business Fraternity at Davis & Elkins College. He was a Belington Festival & Fairs Association member and a member of First United Methodist Church of Elkins.
The family will receive friends Monday, Nov. 19, from noon until 1 p.m. at which time Mr. Reed will be moved to Mountain State Memorial Gardens, where graveside services will be conducted. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate. The H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and West Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard will conduct full military rites, and interment will follow.
