Roy Simms, an Elkins High School sports legend who spent years working with local youth, died at approximately 3 p.m. today while at a Davis & Elkins College men's basketball team practice.
A close friend of Simms confirmed the reports to The Inter-Mountain at about 4:30 p.m.
Simms was a former head boys' basketball coach at Elkins High School and a current assistant coach for D&E's men's team. After starring in basketball and football at EHS, Simms received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Detroit, where he played from 1979 until 1983.
Close to 350 people recently turned out to a benefit for the coach to help raise money for a needed heart and kidney transplant.
