‘New Deal’ a community party enjoyed by many

December 8, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

What a wonderful day it was at the Kump Center's "New Deal at the Crossroads" event on Labor Day weekend. No one could have anticipated the community's enjoyment of what seemed like a community lawn party.

Visitors from other parts of the state, and beyond, enjoyed special tours of this historic home, and a Will Rogers impressionist brought his down-home humor. On stage, the Klines, JumpStart and the Elm St. Alley Cats added musical fun to the day, while artisan crafts were displayed and sold by local vendors. "Ol' Ed" (Ed Geisel) shared his tales as a 1930s hobo. Other activities included apple butter making by the First Church of Christ Senior Youth Group and a 4-H group display as well as visiting geese. And did I mention the perfect weather and the terrific pie auction featuring pies from more than 30 of the area's most accomplished bakers?

Many thanks to all who made this Kump Center event a success: donors, attendees, bidders, musicians, supporters and committed volunteers. Without you this event could not have taken place nor experienced such success. And special thanks to Doug Conrad of Conrad Auctions for serving as auctioneer.

Thanks to AFHA AmeriCorps, Allegheny Insurance, Augusta Heritage Center, City of Elkins, Crazy Harry's, Davis & Elkins College, Davis Memorial Hospital, Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, Durland Consulting, Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission, Elkins Randolph County Chamber of Commerce, Elkins Kiwanis Club, Elkins Rotary Club, First Church of Christ Senior Youth Group, Henry G's, KFC, Kroger/Kevin Brown, Otterbein United Methodist Church, Preservation Alliance of West Virginia, Randolph County Board of Education, Randolph County Commission, Randolph County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Randolph County Community Corrections, Randolph County Solid Waste Authority, Rite Aid/Rick Hedrick, Shop 'N Save, Stroehmann Bakeries, Tygart Valley Lions Club, Walmart, 98.8 WDNE, West Virginia Division of Culture and History and YMCA, and special thanks to our bakers and volunteers.

Thank you to the community for helping raise funds to benefit the development of the Kump Education Center and its restoration.
