ERIE?(PA.) - Virginia State scored eight points in the final 1:31 of play Friday night, earning a tight 65-64 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan in first round play at the Porreco Cup Invitational Tournament held on the campus of Gannon University. The Bobcats had a final opportunity to claim the win, but missed their final shot at the buzzer.
After leading 34-31 at the half, the Bobcats weathered a VSU surge that saw the Bobcats down 54-52 at the six-minute mark. A Noah Cottrill three-pointer was followed by five consecutive points from Kelsey Williams, putting Wesleyan up 60-57 with less than two minutes remaining. Virginia State's Mike Bynum was fouled shooting a three-pointer, and connected on all three attempts to tie the game at 60-60.
Down 65-64, the Bobcats put VSU on the line with five seconds left. The Trojans failed to convert the front end of the bonus, setting the stage for Wesleyan's last-second attempt.
Bynum led all scorers with 22 points. Williams led the Bobcats with 20 points and 10 rebounds, with Cottrill scoring 16 points behind five three-pointers. Ray Warren contributed a line of 11 points, eight rebounds, and a team-high six assists. Wesleyan maintained a 34-28 team rebounding advantage. The Bobcats (4-3) are back in action this afternoon in day two of the tournament.
