Thomas "Tom" Joe Long, 80, of the Gaines community, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, in Louis A. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Clarksburg.

He was born in Upshur County, March 6, 1932, a son of the late Joe A. and Ruth Hamner Long.

On Aug. 30, 1952, he was united in marriage to Naomi C. "Peg" Heater Long, who preceded him in death Dec. 27, 2005.

He is survived by one daughter, Dianne Long of Beaver Falls, Pa.; one son, Burlin R. Long and wife, Kim, of Rochester, Pa.; two grandchildren, Andrea and husband, Brandon Daniels, and Amanda Radaker; four sisters, Martha and husband, Richard Leuszler, of Amherst, Ohio, Barbara and husband, Larry Ferren, of Shinnston, Rita and husband, Carl Watson, of Walkersville and Caroline Long of Buckhannon; four brothers, Dale Long of Gaines, John Long and wife, Cheryl, of Gaines, Basil Long of Gaines and Donald Long and wife, Martha, of Arlington,; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Ellen Jean Bennett; and three brothers, Andrew Dixon Long, Burl Long and Davis Ross Long.

Mr. Long was a member of Rochester Lodge No. 0229 A.F. & A.M and Salem Ridge United Methodist Church. He served in the Pittsburgh International Guard. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War. He retired as a general foreman from ARMCO Steel in Ambridge, Pa., with 36 years of service. Tom liked the outdoors and had many beagles named "Mike." He enjoyed piloting airplanes and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 7 p.m. at Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel. The body will lie in state Thursday, Dec. 20, from 10 to 11 a.m., the funeral hour, at Salem Ridge United Methodist Church with Pastor David Jessie officiating. Interment will follow in Salem Ridge Cemetery where Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663, Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion and Disabled American Veterans Chapters 5 and 36 will conduct military honors. Rock Cave Lodge No. 81 A.F. & A.M. will conduct Masonic rites at the graveside.
