Barbour County offers historic sites and tremendous natural beauty - especially when covered with a blanket of winter snow sparkling in the sun.
Nestled in the hills of West Virginia, Barbour County is the historic site of the first land battle of the Civil War. The county boasts many tourist attractions and recreation areas including the Philippi Covered Bridge, Adaland Mansion, Teter Creek Lake and Audra State Park, among others.
Those who love fishing and other outdoor activities in the winter may want to make a trip to Teter Creek Lake. Located north of Belington on W.Va. 92, the lake offers public fishing, hiking and bird watching, along with 20 campsites, a pavilion, a boat ramp and picnic areas.
Other visitors may want to travel to Audra State Park. Activities there include camping, hiking, an Alum cave, and picnic areas. Visitors can access the park from Route 119 south of Philippi on the Audra Road or from Belington by driving nine miles after crossing the river at the traffic light. The park has 335 acres with 64 campsites.
Those visiting Belington will be wowed with the variety of unique shops in the small town.
At 301 Crim Ave., in Belington, shoppers can visit R and S. Tuxedos and Italian Charms and take the opportunity to purchase items close to home.
Also at that location is Karma Kreations, featuring wire sculptured art to wear and unique hand-crafted jewelry.
Just down the street at 311 Crim Ave., LeLynns Lullabies is the place for those shopping for infants and babies.
"The idea for LeLynn's Lullabies came about from my first-born grandson, LeLynn," owner Tina McCumbers said. "We decided to open the store in hopes of helping the community with reasonably priced things. LeLynn's Lullabies specializes in baby items, but also offers other merchandise, such as clothing, candle sets, toothbrushes, even tape."
The Floral mix, at 310 Crim Ave., has old and new home products and decor to create a look for anyone. The Floral Mix offers many handmade items by local crafters, artisans and woodworkers They also carry jewelry and foods.
Tygart River General Store LLC, located at 612 Crim Ave., offers hardware, feed, garden supplies, antiques, primitives, crafts, new and used clothing and dollar-store items. And at 1407 Crim Ave., Country Creations offers shoppers the opportunity to buy locally.
