Victor Hamrick

January 5, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

Behind every good TV broadcast is a dedicated technician who helps to make it happen.

In the case of Comcast SportsNet, the man behind the scenes was Victor L. Hamrick, a bearded free spirit who might just as easily have been found playing a guitar, camping in the wilds or wandering the earth.

He died Dec. 28, 2012 of smoke inhalation from a fire the previous day at his home in Claymont, Del. He was 57.

"He was a good friend and mentor to many, had a great sense of humor and was always willing to lend a hand," said Dave Finocchiaro, senior director of engineering for Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia.

"He had a thirst for technology and was always ready for a challenge. He would dive right in to research new ideas. He loved to explore the world, whether by land, sea or air and would go on great adventures."

Victor was born at Elkins, to Clinton E. and Nancy Baker Hamrick.

He graduated from high school there in 1973 and enlisted in the Air Force. He served for six years as an avionics mechanic stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.

He studied physics at Westminster College, in Salt Lake City. He worked for 20 years as an engineer for Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, TV, home of the Phillies, Sixers, Flyers and Union. Previously, he worked in the same capacity at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City and at QVC, the home-shopping network.

"He loved music and playing the guitar," his family said. "He also enjoyed camping and was a free spirit and a lover of life."

Besides his parents, he is survived by Linda and Larry Shiflett, Chris and Dennis Fincham, Clinton E. II and Tammy Hamrick and Gregory and Dee Hamrick.

Memorial service was Friday at Marvil Funeral Home, 1110 Main St., Darby, PA. An additional service is being planned for the spring in West Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victor L. Hamrick Memorial Fund, in care of Citizens Bank of WV, P.O .Box 449, Beverly, WV 26253 or www.victorhamrickmemorial.com.
