A Buckhannon man remains lodged in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond after being charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery stemming from an alleged altercation on the dance floor of a local club in December.
According to the complaint filed in Upshur County Magistrate Court, Roger Tiffner II, 32, of Route 2, Box 204, and another couple bumped into each other on the dance floor of the Fraternal Order of Eagles on Dec. 15. The complaint stated that Tiffner punched the man, Chris Harper, in the face, knocking him to the floor. Harper's wife, Margaret, told state troopers that Tiffner then punched her husband several more times in the face while he was on the ground.
The Harpers had left in a private vehicle to go to St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon prior to the arrival of the West Virginia State Police, according to the complaint. Some witnesses, however, told investigators that they had only seen Tiffner hit Chris Harper one time, according to the complaint.
Margaret Harper told the officers that when she tried to break up the altercation, Tiffner hit her in the face. Officers reported seeing a mark above the left eye when she was interviewed about the allegations while at the hospital, the complaint stated.
Chris Harper received three stitches in his lip, staples in the back of his head, two black eyes and a bruised face, among other injuries, according to the complaint.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 1 p.m., Jan. 24 in Magistrate Court. Tiffner was taken into custody on Jan. 14.
