Members of the Mountaineer Chapter of Izaak Walton League of America were excited about the 48 children that attended its annual Youth Conservation Day in August. The weather was almost perfect and the sounds of the children's laughter and yelling in excitement over catching their first fish made it a day to remember.
This free event was organized by chapter members Bruce Evans, Jay Winn and Don Thomason as a non-competitive, educational event, to improve the youth's knowledge and skills of the great outdoors, and for children ages 8 to 17.
This exciting day was made possible by grants for the National Rifle Association, National IWLA Endowment Board and the Mountaineer Chapter.
Children attend the 2012 Youth Conservation day.
The children were divided into groups and visited learning stations from fishing, air rifle and archery, animal ID, Department of Environmental Protection, youth activities, telemetry, skeet shooting and stream ecology. The winner of the air rifle event was Daniel Scott.
Officials would like to thank all the parents who encouraged their children to attend and to the following for their special skills: West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, West Virginia DEP, Tygart Valley Chapter of NWTF and local Allegheny Mountain Chapter Friends of the NRA President Steve Purdum.
Take time to mark your calendars and plan on attending the 2013 Youth Conservation Day that has been scheduled for Aug. 10.
More information on this event will be available at a later date.
