An automobile fire late Tuesday evening totaled the towing engine of a tractor-trailer that was parked outside a Heavner Acres residence in Elkins.
Elkins Fire Department Chief Tom Meader said a Mill Creek Builders big rig, located at 219 N. Randolph Ave., was damaged by the fire that started in the engine bay of the vehicle.
Elkins Fire Department solely responded to the incident, which occurred at 11:21 p.m. Tuesday night.
Meader said the truck caught fire after it was left idling outside the residence. The initial fire spread throughout the engine compartment and into the cabin of the truck.
The trailer was not damaged, Meader said, but the towing engine was a total loss.
Firefighters' efforts to extinguish the flames caused a buildup of water on the ground.
Due to cold weather, Meader said, the water soon turned to ice.
The Randolph County Department of Highways was called by Elkins Fire Department to help salt and cinder the surrounding slick roadway.
