Local man apprehended after standoff

Buckhannon resident faces several charges

A Buckhannon man is facing a host of charges following a standoff with the West Virginia State Police that ended peacefully in the early morning hours Friday.

According to information provided by the Buckhannon detachment of the West Virginia State Police, Edward Matthew Williams, 27, of Route 4, Box 456A, is lodged in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail. Bond had not been set in the case, as he was still awaiting his hearing in Upshur County Magistrate Court as off 11 a.m. Friday.

Williams is facing two counts of burglary, two counts of child neglect, and single counts of grand larceny, breaking and entering and destruction of property stemming from the incident that began around 8:30 p.m. Thursday when officers responded to a call about an alleged hunting accident. Senior Trooper V.J. Pyles said a witness told him that Williams had said his brother had been shot, a claim that Pyles said later proved to be unfounded.

The State Police received another call Thursday night regarding an in-progress burglary involving a person identified by police as Williams. The information provided by the State Police stated that Williams had allegedly broken into two homes on Booney Hull Road, ransacked one of the homes and had gained firearms.

He is also alleged to have threatened an occupant at one of those homes before taking the man's truck. Williams is reported to have put his own two children into the truck.

Pyles requested assistance from other police agencies to the Adrian area, and a stand-off with the officers soon began on a road just off West Virginia Route 20 The police report stated that several hours passed before state troopers were able to persuade Williams to release the two children. Williams was then taken into custody. No injuries were reported during the night's events.

The police report stated that more charges could be pending as information is gathered in the investigation.
