A fire claimed the home of an elderly Philippi woman early Monday morning.

While Goldie Parker was inside her home on 4-H Camp Road in Philippi when the fire began, she was able to escape without any injuries, said John Green, the fire chief of the Philippi Volunteer Fire Department.

Green said Parker was standing on her porch when firefighters responded at 12:59 a.m. to the scene.

The Belington Emergency Squad also responded. Parker was transported by ambulance to a neighbor's home where she stayed the night.

Philippi Volunteer Fire Department officials, with the mutual aid of the Belington and Junior volunteer fire departments, were able to contain the flames within 30 minutes, Green said, adding that firefighters remained on scene for about two hours.

The home sustained water damage. Green said the structure remained in tact, but the house was still considered a total loss.

"Heat melted a lot of stuff, and it had some water damage to it. It more or less totaled the whole thing," Green said. "It didn't burn down."
