New crematory first in Randolph County

February 26, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

Anyone who may have visited the Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Valley Bend over the past few months may have noticed construction on a new addition. The 1,000-square-feet addition houses a state-of-the-art crematory unit; in fact, it is the only crematory unit in Randolph County.

The unit itself weighs approximately 27,000 pounds, is 14 feet long and more than 5 feet wide.

Owner Ryan Summerfield said, "Logistically it was a nightmare to transport, unload and set in place. Fortunately, we had the support of the community and the help of great contractors."

The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Valley Band is now equipped with the only crematory in Randolph County.

The unit was manufactured and transported from Florida, unloaded by crane onto pipe then set into place with trucks and pulley systems. The process to get an onsite crematory was not an easy task.

"We actually started working on obtaining the proper permits a little over a year ago," Summerfield said. "We worked hand and hand with the Department of Environmental Protection and the West Virginia Board of Funeral Service Examiners to ensure everything was done properly. Having the only onsite crematory was very important to us on many levels, I feel the most important being that your loved one will never leave our care."

The funeral home's new addition also includes more offices and a children's room. "We outgrew our current office space and needed more room. We added the children's room because we wanted kids and parents to have a comfortable and welcoming space", Summerfield said.

The children's room includes a toy box full of toys and games, a flat screen television with a DVD player and a library of movies. There is even an Amish handcrafted rocking chair. In the spring officials plan on finishing the landscaping and installing the remainder of the outside lighting.

The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services is a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the West Virginia Funeral Directors Association and the Cremation Association of North America.
