A team of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade mathletes from Moorefield Middle School has won the 30th annual Elkins Chapter National Society of Professional Engineers MATHCOUNTS competition. Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School placed second. Tucker Valley Middle School placed third and Pickens School fourth.
Members of the winning team are Brock Dolly, Seth Hoyt, Rion Landes and Corey Wehland. Second-place winners include Nathaniel Friend, Josh Cragle, Sean Crites and Cole Tonkin. These two teams will advance to the state competition at Braxton County Middle School March 9.
In addition, individual winners include Katie McCausley from Moorefield Middle School and Matthew Barrett, Star Winemiller and David Gillum from Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School, who also will compete.

MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program, and it is sponsored by Swecker Engineering and local engineers.
It is designed to increase enthusiasm for and advance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States.
