Upshur County Relay For Life committee members are prepared for the annual Relay kickoff event at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mountain View Event Center in Buckhannon.
Relay For Life team members and people of any age are welcome to learn how to get involved in fighting back against cancer in the local community.
The co-chairs for 2013 are Crystal Shaw and Bobby Stell, who have been longtime committee members and team members with Upshur County Relay For Life.
"We are focusing this year's Relay event around the family," Stell said. "This year's theme is 'Relay Family Reunion ... A Relay-tion Celebration.' We will be also reaching out to the youth of Upshur County, trying to get them involved by educating them about preventive measures against cancer. This is also the American Cancer Society's 100th year, so we will be celebrating that as well."
There will be activities for kids, while the adults can talk with committee members and learn about starting a team, becoming a sponsor, registering as a survivor and more. The Women of the Moose group will cater a picnic-style dinner for the event.
The dollars raised go to the American Cancer Society, which provides cancer support services and research to find a cure for cancer.
During the 2012 ACS year, which was Sept. 1, 2011, through Aug. 31, 2012, the ACS provided 3,974 patients and caregivers with 7,143 support services in their fight against cancer. Of those, 2,012 were newly diagnosed cancer patients.
Here's a brief look at what Relay For Life dollars in West Virginia covered in 2012: 269 women received a Reach to Recovery visit, 55 individuals received 1,436 rides to treatment via Road to Recovery, 81 patients and caregivers received 144 nights of lodging at Hope Lodge and 440 women received a free wig.
In addition, the American Cancer Society in West Virginia is raising awareness about the need for colorectal cancer screening through a colon cancer screening grant.
Everyone is invited to join Upshur County Relay For Life this year and fight back against cancer.
The 2013 Relay For Life is scheduled for July 26 at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School.
