CHARLESTON - After holding off Williamstown, Tucker County will get its shot at four-time Class A state champion Huntington St. Joseph in today's state tournament semifinals.
Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at the Civic Center.
St. Marys, which defeated Tygarts Valley, will meet Wheeling Central in the other semifinal.
The fourth-seed Lady Mountain Lions appeared to be in control in Wednesday's contest, leading 36-19 at the halftime break.
But the Lady Yellowjackets, who defeated Tucker County 84-82 in last year's quarterfinals, dwindled the deficit to two points before the Lady Mountain Lions eventually pulled away.
"We knew Williamstown wouldn't quit," first-year Tucker County coach Jim Ambrose said. "We knew they were going to give us a run because they are a senior-oriented team that's been there before.
"We weathered the storm and got some big baskets when we needed them."
Stephanie Betler had 24 points and Amber Evans added 21 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.
While the Lady Mountain Lions held on to advance, St. Joseph had no trouble in rolling past Man in its quarterfinal contest, 89-29.
Griffin Dempsey tallied 27 points and guard Mychal Johnson had 17 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds for the Lady Irish (23-1).
In the Class AAA semifinals, Logan will face Spring Valley at 5:30 p.m., while Morgantown will meet Parkersburg South at 9 p.m.
The finals will be held on Saturday in all classes.
