Buckhannon-Upshur Camera Club activities planned; new members welcome

March 16, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

The Buckhannon-Upshur Camera Club is well into its new year of activity with trips and programs.

The club meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month at the Upshur Senior Center.

In January, well-known local photographer Ron Buckton gave a presentation on amateur wedding photography. Al Tucker did the program in February on landscape photography, showing photos of waterfalls and vistas of the Blue Ridge Parkway and discussing camera settings for various shots and lighting.

‘Fallen Heroes,’ by club member Al Tucker, is shown here. It won the March photo of the month in the category white on white for the Buckhannon Upshur Camera Club.

Lanora Wentz, the owner of Main Street Studios, is the guest speaker on March 28, and she plans to speak on photo matting. Her presentation will benefit anyone who plans to submit entries to the West Virginia Strawberry Festival's Photography Contest, which is sponsored by the BUCC, and the Memorial Day Photography Contest, sponsored by the Taylor County Photography Club.

In April, Dennis Govoni, a well-known photographer and speaker from the northern Virginia area, has planned a presentation called "Shooting the Light." Daniel Friend, a retired West Virginia University photographer, has planned a program on sports photography.

The club sponsors a monthly photo tour to a destination of interest. On Feb. 23, Frank Eskew, Amanda Hayes, Carrie Mills, Bonnie Riffle and Melissa and Zach Toothman ventured along the Middle Fork River and Audra State Park for winter scene photography. Future destinations include Babcock State Park and New River Gorge, Holly River State Park, Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh and the eastern West Virginia mountains for wildflower photography.

Each month, the club holds a Photo of the Month contest with a different category challenging member photography skills. This month, the category is nonobjective/abstract photography. Mary Orndorff won in December in the holly category. Al Tucker won the January food title contest. He also won February's white on white contest with his "Fallen Heroes" photo.

The Buckhannon-Upshur Camera Club always is open to new members, who range in experience and photographic interest. The more experienced photographers are very willing and excited to coach new photographers.

The club is well into planning for this year's Strawberry Festival Photo Contest. Area photographers are encouraged to participate. An entry form and rules are available online at www.bucameraclub.com.
